HEMINGWAY’S HEROES
Key West, Florida - June 25-July 3, 2012 - Proposal Deadline: Oct. 18 (A)/19 (B)
The Hemingway Society invites scholars to submit proposals for the 15th International Hemingway conference: “Hemingway’s Heroes.” The conference will be attended by Hemingway experts throughout the world, including professors, scholars, publishers, and writers.
“Hemingway’s Heroes” proposals should use literary analysis to explore the heroic figure.
Proposals: Organizers welcome proposals on all aspects of Hemingway’s heroes, but we are particularly interested in contributions that explore Hemingway’s heroes as ageless, timeless, and cross-cultural, affecting the presence or absence of order/chaos.
Topics of the conference may include but are not limited to the following:

Format: A literary analysis paper should include an original thesis statement supported by body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should be organized by a strong topic sentence and be developed by textual evidence (quotes, examples).
All proposals are due by Oct. 18 (A)/19(B). Proposals will be chosen based on the originality, clarity, organization, support, and unity of literary analysis.

- How does Santiago manifest the characteristics universal to the ageless heroic figure?
- How and why does Manolin change as a result of Santiago’s heroism?
- How does Manolin learn about the nature of heroism from his relationship with Santiago?
- How does Santiago’s age influence his heroism?
Timeless Hero:
- How does Santiago’s conflict represent the timeless ability for man to grow and demonstrate heroism?
- What timeless values does Santiago reveal are inherent to the hero?
- How is Santiago’s heroism still relevant today?
- How does Santiago’s heroism reveal the timeless struggle of good against evil?
Cross Cultural Hero:
- Is Santiago an American hero? Why or why not?
