True, but is the BBC adaptation true to the book? There are some differences seen between the two. In the other version we watched before the BBC, Lucie liked being in Darnay's company. In the actual novel Lucie enjoyed being around Darnay.

To some degree, Julia, you are right, but I think that Kenneth's Genre Savviness is probably correct... a novel is better at hiding people's tones than a film, so the screenwriter and director, who have presumably read all of it, would have to make the actress act in a way which is true the the way her romance arc ends in a way which is capable of being less obvious in a novel.

BaSED on my experiences, LUcy is not in love with anyone yet. Right now she has gone through hard times recently, like Dr. Maneete's release. He has been acting strangely such as walking around at night, and Lucy has tried her best to comfort him. Lucy is emotionally stirred up and has not thought of her lover.

I, although am married to Fernand, I still am in love with my young-life lover Edmond Dontes. My daughter truly has the strongest bond to me. What is love? Is it an attraction to someone or a deep connection? If speaking about connections, Lucie loves me more than her own husband. Mr. Lorry, I beg of you to help free my husband. Charles traveled to France to save this Gabelle, but was captured by the revolutionists and sent to prison (La Force). My father, Dr. Manette is confident that he is able to free Charles because of his standing as a prisoner of the Bastille.

I am sorry Charles and mean no harm to you and your wife. She has no interest in me and is just a friend. Lucie has changed me for the better and made me consider changing my life. I would do anything for her, including giving up my life. Also I am sorry that you are in prison again and will try my best to get you out.

I truly fear for my husband's safety. While his is in that wretched prison, anything could happen to him. No matter what the others think, I must keep a positive mindset as to his whereabouts. I must remain confident that he has a perfectly reasonable explanation for all of this.

I am truly sorry that you had to witness Charles being re-arrested. I did as much as I could by talking to the soldiers and they told he his accusers which were the Defarges and one other individual. I cannot believe they would betray us! Then the judge names me as one of the accusers! This is just madness!

I am sorry that your husband has gone into France at a time like this. I tried warning him not to go, but he went anyway. He should have never gone, knowing his emigrant stauts and his relations to nobility. However, I do wish your father luck and your husband well. Maybe Charles will make it out of France. After all, Dr. Manette got him to a trial and acquitted once, perhaps he can do it again.

Lucie, I only mean this as a friend, and I truly regret my horrid actions from earlier on in life. I have wasted my life and I lost you to Charles Darnay, I do wish to still be friends though. Lucie I am dearly sorry for all that has happened to you and my dear son-in-law. We should have taken more precautions after Charles's initial arrest but we did not. As a result of this he has been arrested yet again with Madame Defarge as the prosecutor. I did my best to save him but it was in vain. I am sorry my dear daughter but I do believe Charles will not make it out alive this time.

I have watched my dearest daughter grieve for Charles when he was imprisoned. The depression she felt while he was in jail was evident in her every act. The joy she showed when Charles came home could not inspire doubts of her love for him in even the most cynical of hearts. There is no question that my daughter is in love with Charles Darnay.

Lucie, I admire your devotion to your husband, Charles. However, at some point, you must realize how vain your hopes are. Darnay has been acquitted from many crimes before, but the revolution will not hesitate to murder him in cold blood. The chaos created by the populus is, sometimes, too great to overcome. Though I am determined to make you happy and to make your life more enjoyable, I fear that raising false hopes does nothing but hurt you more eventually. I am trying to help you, but I simply think you should prepare yourself.

I do not know who Lucie is in love with because I don't think Lucie even knows who she is in love with. She seems to focus on her father more than herself, so she does not know. However, I believe that just because she married Charles, she is not necessarily in love with him.

I too think she does not know who she truly is in love with because of how Dickens interprets them as not of a close relationship. I feel like Dickens is probably showing the downsides of love a first sight at this part of the novel. This was probably an improvisation of what happened to him in real life, but with different names and such.

Mrs. Manette-Darnay married the man she truly loves. Having been her guardian for all of her childhood and teenage years, I believe that she would have been best suited with Charles Darnay.
