Portfolio Letter and Year-long Writing Goals Task
Purpose:
Over the course of the year, students will once again create a portfolio where you will compile your writings. During the year, you will grow and change as a writer, and your portfolio will demonstrate those changes and improvements. To embark on this task, you will need a hard copy portfolio, a digital portfolio using weebly.com, pens and pencils, paper, a thumb drive, and highlighters. All parts of the portfolio must be saved digitally to your student portal, thumb drive, weebly site, and kept in hard-copy form in your binder. DO NOT throw any writing away!
Many of the writings will correspond to the units you study in class, and some will be additional practice during class/FOCUS. As you begin each new unit of study, you will continue to add to the portfolio. By May, you will have a great quantity and variety of selections in your portfolio. One of those pieces must include all the stages of the writing process: pre-writing, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, and reflecting. You will also select several pieces which show your best work.
The main goal of the portfolio is to improve student writing skills and to enhance your abilities as a reader, writer, and thinker. When you take your work seriously and make an effort to learn and improve, you will be able to see your progress in the final portfolio. Your final portfolios will be assessed based on selection, reflection, content, and mechanics.
Task:
Your first task for the portfolio is to draft a letter to share with your parents and with your teacher. As always, keep a digital copy! Please use the following guidelines to structure your letter:
1. Format a TYPED friendly letter, including the date,
2. Write one paragraph setting several personal goals for your writing this year,
3. Write one paragraph explaining the expectations for the eighth grade digital writing portfolio,
4. Write one paragraph explaining how you would like help from parents, peers, and teachers with your writing,
5. Please include signature lines for student, parent(s), and teacher,
6. Share your letter and collect the necessary signatures. You will keep the letter digitally in your weebly portfolio.
NOTE: If you are not yet 13, please include a written request asking permission from your parents to have a weebly portfolio. Your portfolio will be password-protected.
Due Date:
Completed letter with parent and student signature due during your English FOCUS class the week of September 17 (A1/2), September 18 (B1/2), September 19 (A5/6), September 20 (B5/6). You will earn 100 points for successful completion by the due date. Late penalties apply for late work.
Upon completion of the goal-setting letter, you will set up your digital portfolio on Weebly!
